The Perfect Bottom Shape

Is there such a thing as the perfect bottom shape? Throughout history there have been many variations of the derriere, most notably those of J-Lo and the Kardashians. But with so many different shapes and sizes and so many different takes on what’s perfect, we’ll have to turn to science to find out the answer.

Bottoms Through Time

The female form comes in many different shapes and many different sizes and the attitude towards what shape and size is deemed ‘perfect’ has varied throughout history. During the Italian Renaissance for example, the fuller figure came out on top, since weight was meant to show off how wealthy you were to others.1

The Victorian Era celebrated the hourglass shape, which meant a tiny waist and bigger hips. In the 1800s, corsets were extremely popular because of their ability to modify the body. Obviously, this was extremely dangerous on the body as it altered the skeletal structure and crushed bodily organs.

In the past 100 or so years, the desired shape has chopped and changed substantially. The 1920s were popular for flatter and athletic bottoms, 1930s was back to the hourglass, mainly due Marilyn Monroe’s iconic influence. The 1960s took it back to flat and the 1970s was all about fitness, the perkier the better.

But what about today? Well nowadays any bum is a good bum.

That’s now the attitude to many in society perhaps because of the rise of the feminist movement and the demand for acceptance of women’s shape regardless of the shape or size.

The Science

But if we posed this question using science, is there a perfect bottom? Well mathematically, there is the old theory of the waist to hip ratio. Many studies show that the waist to hip ratio of 0.7 is the generally found to be the most attractive.2

There’s also the one technique by Mendieta which categorises the bum by analysing the anatomy. These are:

Square – “H” shape
Round – “C” or “O” shape
Heart/pear – “A” shape
Inverted – “V” shape

Many cosmetic surgeons recognise these four shapes when it comes to the female derriere.3 There are other shapes of course but these are the most widely recognised and therefore could be considered the more perfect shapes.
